A little preparation

Book ahead where you can, wear comfortable shoes and let the rhythm of the city do some of the guiding.

Arrive at the square before the crowds gather and take in the proportions of St. Peter's.

Reserve museum entry in advance, especially between April and October.

Shoulders and knees should be covered inside the basilica and sacred spaces.

Keep at least thirty minutes unassigned. The best discoveries are often unhurried.
